History and identity
The “City of Flowers” and towns such as Barva, Santo Domingo and San Joaquín preserve churches, parks and houses associated with coffee development. Sarapiquí adds a distinct identity of rivers, cacao, pineapple, conservation, rural communities and Caribbean links.
Landscape and territory
From the Central Valley, land rises to Barva and the Central Volcanic Range, then drops sharply through cloud and rain forest toward Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. This narrow province contains urban districts, farms, mountains and tropical lowlands.
Climate
Central Heredia is mild, windy and seasonally wet. San Rafael and Barva are cooler and foggier. Sarapiquí is warm, highly humid and rainy through much of the year.
Getting around
Train and bus services connect Heredia with San José and Alajuela. Valley towns are close but congested. Sarapiquí is reached over mountain routes or through Guápiles and should not be treated as a quick extension of Heredia city.
