Capital culture, creative districts and south-central mountains
San José Province extends far beyond the capital. It concentrates institutions, museums, theatres, markets and some of the country’s most dynamic urban districts, then continues through coffee country, Los Santos highlands, mountain villages and the broad Pérez Zeledón valley.
Coffee, volcanoes, crafts and northern lowlands
Alajuela links a city near Costa Rica’s main international airport with coffee towns, Poás Volcano, the San Ramón mountains and an extensive Northern Zone of rainforest, cattle country and hot springs around San Carlos and La Fortuna.
Religious heritage, volcanoes and agricultural valleys
Cartago was Costa Rica’s colonial capital and preserves some of the country’s most important religious and historical symbols. The province also contains Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes, Orosi Valley, highland farming towns and corridors toward the Caribbean and Talamanca.
Historic cities, coffee and forest toward the Caribbean
Heredia is a small Central Valley province that extends through a narrow corridor into Sarapiquí’s Caribbean lowlands. It combines closely spaced historic towns, coffee traditions, Barva Volcano and one of Costa Rica’s most important rainforest and scientific-tourism regions.
Savannas, Chorotega towns, volcanoes and the North Pacific
Guanacaste contains some of Costa Rica’s best-known beaches, but its identity also lives in cattle savannas, Liberia and Nicoya, Chorotega pottery, civic festivals and the volcanoes of its mountain range.
Ports, peninsulas, cloud forest and the South Pacific
Puntarenas is Costa Rica’s largest and most geographically dispersed province. It includes the port city on the Gulf of Nicoya, Monteverde, the Central Pacific, parts of the Nicoya Peninsula, Quepos, Osa, Golfito and offshore territory such as Cocos Island.
Afro-Caribbean culture, canals, cacao and the southern Caribbean
Limón brings together port cities, coastal villages, canals, plantations, Indigenous territories and major protected areas. Afro-Caribbean culture, Limonese calypso, cacao and distinctive food clearly differentiate the province from the rest of Costa Rica.
