            Budgeting for Costa Rica

Estimate accommodation, food, transport, parks and activities without relying on a misleading single figure.

            The essentials

Costa Rica can suit different travel styles, but remote destinations, private transport and guided activities raise costs. Build the budget per person per night, separating shared expenses and adding a reserve.

            • Indicative budget travel: US$55–90 per person/day.
            • Mid-range travel: US$110–220 per person/day.
            • More comfort or frequent tours: from US$250 per person/day.
            • Ranges exclude international flights and vary by season, occupancy and exchange rate.

Take these figures into your own itinerary

The planner calculates an initial scenario based on duration, travellers, transport and travel style. You can then replace every amount with your real quotes.

            01

            What the ranges include

The budget range assumes a dorm or shared simple room, local sodas, buses and free or low-cost activities. Mid-range combines a hotel, car or shuttle and selected excursions. The higher range adds upgraded lodging, private transfers or frequent guided activities.

These are neither official tariffs nor quotations. Around Christmas, New Year, Easter and in low-supply destinations, accommodation can substantially exceed the average.

            02

            Accommodation

Compare the total including tax, breakfast, parking and cancellation. A non-refundable rate may save little compared with weather or route-change risk.

For groups, a house can reduce per-person cost, but check cleaning, deposit, access, security and transport. In remote areas, paying more for location may eliminate a car or daily transfer.

            03

            Food and water

Local sodas and markets help control costs; restaurants in tourism areas and hotels usually cost more. Ask whether prices include taxes and service.

Tap water is drinkable in many areas, but do not assume this at every rural property. Confirm locally. A reusable bottle reduces purchases and waste.

            • Budget for three meals, snacks and drinks.
            • Breakfast included can simplify early excursion days.
            • A kitchen saves money only if shopping and cooking fit the route.

            04

            Transport and activities

For a car, add the complete rental, insurance, fuel, tolls, parking and possible ferries. For buses, include taxis or last-mile transfers. For domestic flights, check luggage cost.

Parks may require reservations and admission varies by visitor status. Wildlife tours, boats, canopy or hot springs can become the largest expense: choose two or three priorities.

            05

            Simple worksheet and emergency fund

Calculate: nights × lodging + days × food + main transport + local transport + admissions + tours + insurance + connectivity. Then add 10%–20% for contingencies.

Keep a card and some cash separately. Notify your bank if required and decline unfavourable dynamic currency conversion when a terminal or ATM offers to charge your home currency.

            • Quote in the final billing currency.
            • Check ATM limits and fees.
            • Do not rely on dollars at small businesses.
            • Buy insurance appropriate to activities and medical conditions.
